February is National Children's Dental Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of building healthy dental habits early in life.

What many parents don't realize is that a child's teeth begin forming long before they're visible. That means healthy feeding and dietary habits play an important role from the very start.

Why Early Dental Care Matters

Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly, and hold space for adult teeth. Keeping them healthy prevents discomfort and supports proper development.

Children who start seeing a dentist at an early age, typically develop a healthier and less anxious relationship with dental visits.

Simple Ways to Support Healty Teeth
  • Clean gums before teeth appear. This can be done with a washcloth or an infant toothbrush.
  • Brush twice daily once teeth erupt. Use only a smear of toothpaste on a small toothbrush.
  • Limit frequent sipping on milk or juice. This prevents excess sugars from coating teeth and causing decay.
  • Offer water between meals. Water will aid in keeping teeth rinsed and also reduce the damage for sugary drinks.
  • Schedule the first dental visit by age 1. This helps build a relationship early, monitors dental development, and can identify issues early to prevent painful or expensive treatments.

Small, consistent habits can protect your child's smile for years to come.
